New York Live Music Bar, Bangla Road, Patong

If you’re looking for a great place to party on the infamous Bangla Road in Patong why not pop into the New York Live Music Bar, one of the town’s most popular hangouts? With its small but vibrant interior and highly talented live band, this bar provides an addictive combination of foot-tapping beats and infectious atmosphere and is the ideal place to grab a few drinks, request a few songs – maybe even have a jam with the skilled musicians on stage – and generally have an all-round good time. New York Live Music Bar is open from 8pm – 2am and can be found left of the entrance to Soi Rico.

Rock City, Rat-U-Thit Road, Patong

Another popular live music venue is Rock City, Patong’s notorious bastion of rock and heavy metal. Strategically situated opposite the entrance to Bangla on Rat-U-Thit Road, you can’t miss this bar thanks in part to the two Predator-esque statues which flank the doorway. Once inside you will find a good old fashioned rock ‘n’ roll den complete with bar stools, beer, cocktails, a massive gorilla head poised over the stage – and a series of insanely brilliant live bands playing beneath it. This is the perfect nightspot for metal-heads who love the likes of Metallica, AC/DC, Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses but even if you’re not clued up on rock royalty you are still guaranteed to enjoy a night spent here as the atmosphere hots up by the hour and the decibel level only seems to increase.

Illuzion Show & Discotheque, Bangla Road

If you are fond of big choreographed dance numbers and catchy songs – not to mention an array of colourful costumes and futuristic sound and lighting equipment – then Illuzion Show & Discotheque is the place for you! Situated on the second floor of a large venue on Bangla Road, this hot new nightspot features a dance floor, balcony and VIP lounge and hosts an incredible show six nights a week starring performers primarily from Italy and Russia. Everything is high-quality here, from the service to the entertainment and the facilities, so make sure you don’t miss out on a dazzling night at Illuzion.

White Room Nightclub, Soi Gonzo, off Bangla Road

Searching for an upscale venue in which to sip cocktails and mingle with some of Phuket’s most glamorous while talented DJs play the hottest beats? Make your way to the White Room Nightclub on Soi Gonzo where, as you may have guessed, pretty much everything is white including the dress code. Effortlessly sophisticated but still offering a great party atmosphere, the White Room Nightclub is an ideal place to go if you want to dance to the latest House, R&B and Hip Hop hits while sipping cocktails, Cristal or Belvedere vodka – dressed all in pristine white, of course.

Timber Hut, Phuket Town

While Patong is undeniably party central on the island of Phuket it’s still worth making a trip or two to Phuket Town in the evenings to check out the nightlife here. There are a number of worthy live music joints to be discovered here, as well as themed bars and the ever-ubiquitous disco – but if you want to visit a long-running Phuket institution you really should head to Timber Hut, on Yaowarat Road. It may not look like much from the outside – just an unassuming redbrick building – but this highly popular nightclub is the best place in the town to have an authentic Thai-style night out, complete with tasty Thai food, great cocktails and much-loved songs performed by the skilled band. As well as time-honoured Western favourites and more recent hits you’ll also get to hear some popular Thai rock songs by the likes of Carabao and Loso, while in between sets a DJ is sure to get you grooving with his dance and hip hop beats. While a number of farang (foreigners) do come to Timber Hut the punters are mostly Thai so it’s an ideal way to mingle with the locals and maybe make some new friends from the Land of Smiles.
