OVERVIEW

St Lucia is a beautiful Caribbean island most famous for its two dramatic peaks – the Pitons – and for its verdant landscapes, which comprise banana plantations, untamed jungle and lush valleys overshadowed by rugged mountains. However the island is also known for its luxurious resorts, which offer some of the finest accommodation and dining the Caribbean has to offer.

There are many unforgettable experiences to be had on the isle of St Lucia, from exploring its powder-soft beaches to kitesurfing, windsurfing or delving into the rainforest for a jungle adventure. A popular destination to visit is the town of Soufrière on the western coast. This historic settlement lies just to the north of the iconic Pitons and is known for its hot springs and grand estates, such as the historic colonial Soufrière Estate which boasts a sulphur baths and botanical garden. There are also a number of scenic rainforest trails and pristine waterfalls in the area, and of course, the Pitons themselves.

The island’s main city of Castries is also worth exploring, not least because it is overshadowed by the majestic Morne Fortune. Head up the mountain to its lofty summit where you will find Fort Charlotte, now reincarnated as a community college but once a site of strong contention between French and British forces in the 18th century. Back in Castries you can indulge in some retail therapy, purchasing stunning locally-made silk-screen items at Bagshaws Shop in La Toc Beach or heading to the Vendors Arcade across from the Central Market, where you can stock up on spices, rum and other suitably Caribbean souvenirs.
