Our Top 3 Street Food Destinations

Street food is a blessing for any discerning traveller. People may think street food is just a quick, cheap option for a snack, but it is so much more than that! Many street vendors craft the food they sell to perfection, right down the last ingredient. Street food should be eaten with care and appreciation, as it is no ordinary snack! We have complied a list of our top 3 street food destinations for eating street food, perfect for all of you foodies out there!

Singapore

Singapore is a blessing to the world of street food as its government has organised its vendors into regulated hawker centres. Only a mere stone’s throw away from Chinatown is one of Singapore’s most notorious hawker centres, the Maxwell Food Centre, the home of the renowned Hainanese chicken rice and Tian Tian chicken rice. People form long queues to try the Zhen Zhen porridge stall, the best traditional congee with chicken or pork and century egg. This stall is also well-known for its generous servings! Make sure you don’t go on a Tuesday as it will be closed! Make your way to Marina South Delicious Food for char kway teow, flat rice noodles fried with soy sauce, chilli, cockles and other savoury morsels. Head to the nearby Hong Lim Food Centre to have a taste of the spicy laska, packed with a fresh coconut flavour and shellfish. Noodle lovers will certainly be in their element with Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist, where they can try char siew (barbequed pork) with mushrooms and wanton (delicious shrimp and pork dumplings). At Satay by the Bay you can revel in a sizzling range of stalls selling Malay-style grilled meat on a skewer called ‘satay’, coming with chunks of cucumber, ketupat (rice cakes) and mouth-watering peanut better dipping sauce. For more delightful street cuisine, make your way to Balestier, Joo Chiat, Geylang, Tiong Bahru Market  or Little India.

Bangkok

It doesn’t matter where you are in Bangkok, whether it’s the swanky shopping malls, the bustling streets of China Town, or the huge outdoor markets, you will always be able to find hawkers serving amazing street food. Here is an array of some of the amazing food you will be able to get your paws on…

Stir Fries

A common side dish you will come across is the notorious stir-fried pork/chicken stir-fry with holy basil and ands chilli. Not forgetting the fried egg on top!

Curry

A curry hawker can be easily spotted by its many curry pots all laid out. There will often be a nice selection of about 6 to choose from, and you can always give it a stir to see what’s in it.

Pad Si Ew

This is flat rice noodles stir-fried with scrambled egg, chopped vegetables, sliced meat and with soy and fish sauce to add flavour. Instead of adding salt and pepper, there will be fresh ground chilies, fish sauce, chilli vinegar or sugar (hot and sweet is the way forward in Bangkok)

Mango Sticky Rice

Imagine, gorgeous sliced Thai honey mango dished on three different types of sticky rice with puffed rice crisps an sweet ‘n’ salty coconut cream.

Mangosteen

Known as ‘Queen of Fruit’, has a purple shell which is cut open to reveal a tender flesh inside that is already segmented. The flesh is quite sweet and smells wonderful, and if you pry it open correctly the segments should pop right out allowing you to eat it whole. Look out for seeds though! They are relatively big and there are normally one or two!

Berlin

Berlin is a fabulous city for eating and drinking, with its many food and drink festivals dotted throughout the year, as well as Street Food Thursday and the famous Oktoberfest. There are hundreds of  contenders in Berlin’s mass of street food stalls, and we think you should try as many as possible! Head over to House of Flying Dumplings for stunning Beijiing Jiaozi dumplings, served as pork and chive or tofu and shitake. This VW truck makes appearences at many of Berlin’s music and street festivals. We know you have heard of the famous Mr Whippy, and what better place to eat his delicious frozen yoghurt than in the beautiful Berlin? Take note, you can only find the famous van in the warmer months, with its exotic homemade fruit toppings, such as its rum-spiked white currant sauce! For 100% local beef and lamb made burgers, make your way to the new Hotzenplotz Berlin truck this summer, located by the Berghain and selling jaw-dropingly tasty-looking burgers. Vatos Tacos is the place for spicy tacos and quesadillas. Their base being a vintage milk  truck and occasionally hosting DJ nights with lots of food and beer, this truck really does offer Mexican style!
