Colourful Beaches of the World
When you picture yourself relaxing on a beach somewhere hot and sunny, perhaps dressed in your best bathing suit and nursing a cocktail in one hand, you probably envision the beach as pure snowy white or yellow-gold in colour. But as a matter of fact, there are many beaches around the world that come in a rainbow variety of hues, from the black volcanic beaches of Bali to the sea glass beaches of Hawaii and Pink Sands Beach in the Bahamas. Papakolea Beach – Hawaii
On the island of Hawaii’s rugged coastline you will find Papalokea Beach, renowned for its attractive green sand – a result of the mineral known as olivine, formed by cooling lava from a now-dormant volcano and washed up on the island’s shore. Small but beautiful, this beach is guaranteed to wow, not only for its unusual hue but for its dramatic loveliness.
Pink Beach – Harbour Island
Have a penchant for pink? Book a flight to Harbour Island, in the breathtaking Bahamas, and drink in the nearly three-mile expanse of rosy sand, which characterizes this attractive beach. The colour arises from a blending of the more familiar sugary white sand with the red shells of a marine organism called foraminifera.
Hyams Beach – New South Wales
While milk-white sand may seem rather bored and run-of-the-mill by now, the blindingly white Hyams Beach is still guaranteed to dazzle you. Hyams Beach has been declared to have the whitest sand in the world, so pristine and sugar-soft you’ll want to snap photo after photo. If that wasn’t enough the beach also boasts crystalline waters and offers charming accommodation and an array of fun-filled activities to try, including snorkeling, surfing and scuba diving.
Prince Edward Island
This Canadian island features not just one colourful beach but several; all of them with distinctive red-coloured sand, caused by the quantities of iron found in the sand, which turns rusty upon contact with oxygen. Fittingly the island’s soil is also red, as the landmass is composed of red sandstone.
Black Sands Beach – Humboldt County
Known as the gateway to the Lost Coast in California, the town of Shelter Cove is just minutes from Black Sand Beach and is unsurprisingly named for its dark-coloured sands, which are a result of the eroding shale cliffs. Take a stroll along this 3.5km expanse of breathtaking shoreline as a prelude to exploring the many unforgettable attractions of the Lost Coast.
