Best Places to Visit in Japan
Japan is a destination that offers something for every type of traveller. Known as the “Land of the Rising Sun,” it’s a country where ancient traditions coexist with some of the world’s most advanced technology. From the bustling streets of Tokyo, where neon lights and skyscrapers meet centuries-old temples, to the tranquil beauty of Kyoto’s shrines and

Tokyo
Tokyo is a must-visit destination for any tourist, in which you’ll get an insight into both Japan’s modern and traditional sides. Start your adventure at Shibuya Crossing, one of the world’s busiest intersections, or marvel at the serenity of Meiji Shrine, tucked away in a lush forest. For panoramic views of the city, head to Tokyo Skytree, and if you’re a fan of tech or anime, Akihabara’s buzzing streets are a dream come true. Food enthusiasts should visit Tsukiji Market for fresh seafood and local specialties.
If you crave a break from the city’s fast pace for a little more peace and quiet, stroll through Ueno Park, where museums and cherry blossoms await, or unwind in the Imperial Palace gardens.
Hiroshima
Hiroshima, located on the western side of Honshu Island, is a city shaped by its tragic past but has emerged as a symbol of peace over the last few decades. The Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park is the heart of the city’s story, standing as a moving reminder of the atomic bombing in 1945. At the park, you’ll find the Atomic Bomb Dome (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) which miraculously survived the blast and remains one of the most iconic landmarks in Hiroshima. The Peace Memorial Museum offers an educational experience, helping visitors understand the devastating impact of the bombing and the city’s journey toward healing and peace. The park itself is a peaceful place to spend the rest of the afternoon, with wide paths surrounded by greenery, and the Flame of Peace burning continuously.
Hiroshima also has plenty of attractions to explore. A short ferry ride will take you to Miyajima Island, home to the stunning Itsukushima Shrine and its famous “floating” torii gate, which seems to rise out of the water at high tide. Miyajima is also great for hiking, with scenic trails through lush forests and sweeping views of the Seto Inland Sea.

Hakone and Mount Fuji
Hakone is a serene getaway known for its rejuvenating hot springs and stunning views of Mount Fuji. Just a short trip from Tokyo, it’s the perfect place to unwind while soaking in Japan’s natural beauty. The town’s famous onsens (hot springs) are perfect for a relaxing soak with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. A visit to Hakone isn’t complete without a boat ride on Lake Ashi, while art lovers must visit the Hakone Open-Air Museum is a must-see, featuring impressive sculptures.
Shiretoko National Park
Shiretoko National Park, on the northeastern tip of Hokkaido, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Japan’s most untouched natural wonders. Its centrepiece is the Shiretoko Five Lakes, a collection of tranquil lakes surrounded by unspoiled forests. Scenic hiking trails weave through the park, revealing breathtaking views of rugged mountains, cascading waterfalls, and the Sea of Okhotsk – perfect for those who are keen for a spot of adventure.
For a closer look at the coastline, boat tours offer stunning vistas of towering cliffs and hidden caves while providing opportunities to spot marine life like dolphins and seals. Wildlife enthusiasts will also find plenty to marvel at, with chances to see native brown bears, foxes, and deer roaming freely too.

Kyoto
Kyoto, often regarded as the cultural heart of Japan, is a must-visit destination for anyone wanting to experience the country’s rich history. One of the city’s most famous attractions is Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, a striking Zen Buddhist temple covered in shimmering gold leaf and surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens. Just a short distance away, Fushimi Inari Taisha beckons visitors with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates that wind up the mountain.
Don’t miss a visit to the historic Gion district. This well-preserved neighbourhood, with its narrow streets lined with wooden machiya houses, feels like a step back in time. As you stroll through Gion, keep an eye out for geishas and maikos (apprentice geishas) in their colourful kimonos, often on their way to perform at exclusive tea houses.
Kyoto is also home to some of Japan’s most peaceful Zen gardens, where you can immerse yourself in a calm and meditative atmosphere. These minimalist landscapes, designed to inspire reflection and inner peace, can be found in temples like Ryoan-ji, where visitors contemplate the simple beauty of nature.
Nagano
Nagano, nestled in the Japanese Alps, is a perfect destination for those seeking a spiritual retreat. If you’re and adventure-seeker, you’ll be spoiled for choice with the outdoor activities on offer year-round. A top attraction is Jigokudani Monkey Park, where visitors can see the famous snow monkeys bathing in the park’s natural hot springs. For those interested in Japan’s spiritual traditions, Zenko-ji Temple is a significant historical site that was once a major pilgrimage destination. You could also take a quiet five minutes here for a spot of reflection and calm.
In the winter, the area is known for its world-class ski resorts, including Hakuba Valley, which draws visitors from all over the world with its excellent slopes and winter sports facilities. As the spring and summer rolls around, Nagano transforms into a hiking paradise. The region is home to lush trails that wind through alpine meadows, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and forests.
Nikko
Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just north of Tokyo, is best known for its stunning shrines and temples, offering visitors a small glimpse into Japan’s spiritual heritage. A must-see is Toshogu Shrine, the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu (the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate). This shrine stands out for its intricate carvings, gold leaf, and the iconic “see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil” monkeys. While here, you can also take a relaxing stroll through Nikko National Park, complete with towering forests and serene lakes.
Another highlight is Kegon Falls, one of Japan’s most impressive waterfalls, plunging 97 metres into the valley below. An elevator takes visitors down to a viewing platform, providing a dramatic and up-close experience – so don’t forget to take those all-important snaps!
Nearby, Lake Chuzenji, nestled at the foot of Mount Nantai is the ideal spot for a leisurely boat cruise or a peaceful walk along the shore. It’s especially glorious during the autumn when the trees surrounding the lake transform into vibrant reds and golds.
